America Runs On…..Beer!

Fall is here and it is time for something sippable that isn’t pumpkin spice flavored.  You might not be able to dunk your donuts in this beverage but you will certainly be able to pair the sweet treat with this drink.

Two of America’s iconic beverage brands are bringing a bold new way for fans to toast the start of fall. Dunkin’ and Harpoon Brewery have come together for the first time to combine the taste of Dunkin’s Espresso Blend Coffee with Harpoon’s famous craft beer, launching the new Harpoon Dunkin’ Coffee Porter. A balanced and smooth brew offering robust and roasty notes, Dunkin’ Coffee Porter was created by Harpoon as a tribute to all the days that Dunkin’ has helped the brew masters fire up the brew kettle.

Beginning today, Harpoon Dunkin’ Coffee Porter will be available throughout the fall, in both 12 oz. bottles and draft at select retail locations across the Eastern U.S.  At 6 percent ABV, Dunkin’ Coffee Porter is a malty tasting brew that has a smooth mouthfeel with aromas of espresso and dark chocolate. The new brew pairs perfectly with fall favorites like hearty stews, seasonal desserts, tailgating and, of course, Dunkin’s signature donuts.

Harpoon Dunkin’ Coffee Porter first premiered last Thursday, September 27 at Dunk-toberfest, the aptly named introduction to Harpoon’s annual Octoberfest event. Beer lovers in the Boston area were given an early taste at Harpoon’s Boston Brewery ahead of the new beer hitting shelves this week.

Dunkin’ has been there for us since the early days when getting the brewery up and running required a lot of beer, and even more coffee,” said Dan Kenary, CEO and Co-Founder of Harpoon Brewery. “We couldn’t think of a better way to pay tribute to the company that’s helped fuel our success than to create something special for our fans by combining the taste of their favorite morning brew with one of ours.”

Never Tell Me The Odds: The Solo Trailer

Views of the Solo trailer are adding up faster than the Millennium Falcon making the Kessel Run.  What are the odds that all The Last Jedi haters are going to be on board for this film?  If you are ready to make the jump check it out here.

The question that remains after seeing Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer is can these young versions of our favorite characters carry on the torch of the legends from the original series.

Jumping into the scruffy looking nerf herding lead is Alden Ehrenreich.  I have never seen him in anything else that I can remember so he comes in with a clean slate for me.

Then there is Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. He comes with lots of recognition so I hope that I can put the image of Troy from Community out of my mind while watching him take on the Billy Dee Williams role.  Fingers crossed he will score a sweet Colt 45 ad deal out of this job.

I have hope they can pull off these roles. The trailer is fun and I think the nostalgia factor is going to help seal the deal for this crew. Besides this isn’t the first time someone has tried to fill the young shoes of Harrison Ford.

Sean Patrick Flanery in the short lived George Lucas series:  The Young Indiana Jones Chroniclesage
Anthony Ingruber in a film that my teenage daughter watched a bunch of times, The Age of Adaline

Shia LaBeouf as Mutt Williams, who wasn’t actually playing Harrison but was being groomed to take over the Indiana Jones throne. (We all know how that turned out.)

I am super excited to see how this all plays out. I am also excited that Ron Howard came in on this project, even if it wasn’t right from the start.  While on set he tweeted all kinds of photos and they have been put together all in one spot. Check it out here

Making Peace with New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year! Let 2018 be the year of the nerd!

It is a bright new year with so much to look forward to, especially on the big screen.  In the Marvel Universe we will finally see the culmination of years of story building in Avengers: Infinity War. We will also be graced with one of my favorite actors, Paul Rudd in a new Ant Man flick.

Outside of Marvel there is Solo: A Star Wars Story, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Ready Player One, Aquaman, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix all coming to theaters.  I am definitely going to be burning a hole in my Movie Pass card with so much to geek out to.

If you haven’t discovered Movie Pass yet, drop what you are doing and download the app. Then come back and finish this blog.  For $10 a month you can see one movie every day of the month.  It works at all the theaters in my area, and there have been no restrictions. Trust me this is not a sales pitch, just something I am super excited about. Here is the link Movie Pass Site

While looking forward to all these awesome films coming out in 2018 it is also time to set some New Years Resolutions.  Topping my list is a lofty goal….. Visit more breweries.  I feel remiss that there are still quite a few in my own backyard that I have not checked out yet.  I’m making a list and Bone Hook, Riptide, South Cypress, Naples Beach Brewery I am coming for you.

Luckily I had the chance recently to cross the newest addition to the local craft beer scene Peace River Beer Company off of my list.  Located just off US 41 in in a huge facility that used to be a spice factory in Punta Gorda this place is amazing.  The taproom is huge and adorned with all kinds of river theming making you feel like you have gone to summer camp…. but with beer!  There is a giant stage with indoor picnic tables and lots of space to spread out.  The bar top is river rock with items that you would find floating down the river.

Peace River Beer Company was started by the same guys that operate Bury Me Brewing in Fort Myers so some of their beers are normally on tap. The day I was in to visit Peace River had ten of their own all new brews on draft.  I was a big fan of the salty Gose, and the smooth dark Pitch Tent Porter.

They have plans for an outdoor beer garden and lots of room for production to expand in the back.  I look forward to coming back to this spot and seeing how it grows.  This is the kind of location that will thrive with local artist and family and friends making it a community.  Check out the rest of the brewery photos and like our facebook page here.

Bluegrass and Beers

After four years of business in Fort Myers Point Ybel has become known for making great Sour beers and bringing great bands to town. Last night they lived up to that reputation on both ends.  On draft among others were Ginger Bread and Fruit Cake Sours, but the one that stole the show for me was the Christmas Morning Cinnamon Roll Sour.  It was all the sweet taste of the morning treat with just enough pucker to balance it out and leave you wanting more.

On stage the band My Girl My Whiskey & Me were playing some amazing tunes.  They are a duo originally out of Naples, FL who moved up to South Carolina to delve deep into their bluegrass routes.  They have developed a great sound that comes with a twist in the form of unique cross genre cover songs.  If you have never heard a bluegrass version of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean or David Bowie’s Space Oddity you don’t know what you are missing.

It may be the covers that draw you into their music, but it is the originals that keep your toes tapping.  The awesome part about this couple is that they are currently living out of their van on a cross country tour.  Their goal is to visit 50 states in 52 weeks.

I definitely suggest seeing My Girl My Whiskey and Me if they come to your town.  You should be able to find out where they are going to be by checking out their website and social media.

While I wait for them to come back to town I will continue to keep you up to date on the great beers coming out of Point Ybel!

Star Wars is Coming

The new Star War movies have been coming out fast and furiously ever since Disney took over the franchise.  It is getting hard to avoid spoilers and spending every waking moment obsessing over each detail as the hype builds and the days count down to the premiere of Star Wars The Last Jedi.

That is why I thought now would be the perfect time to reflect on Star Wars Celebration 2017 that recently took place in Orlando.  Hopefully this will also help hold you over for a few more days until the big release.

If you don’t know, Celebration is four days of non stop Star Wars love in the form of a convention.  There were panels on everything from obscure characters of the films to collecting Hallmark ornaments (one of my favorites).

The most powerful moment of the weekend was when the trailer of The Last Jedi played for the first time ever. Those who couldn’t fit in the four panel rooms set aside for this filled the convention floor as seen in the picture above. The room went silent as everyone strained to hear each second of the clip.  Cheers, tears, and goosebumps quickly followed.  It was one of those unforgettable moments that you were lucky to share with so many other fans.

Another highlight of the weekend for me was the 501st Legion Bash with a special performance my Weird Al.  The party was huge with a great Cantina theme with star wars themed cocktails and costumed performers around the room. But nothing could beat the up close intimate setting for hearing Weird Al belt out a mix of his hits and rare songs along with all his Star Wars themed gems.

Another memory to not be forgotten….this guy in full Darth Maul make up hanging in a hotel hot tub with a bunch of random hotel guest.  Only at Celebration.

The link above will take you to the full facebook album with pictures from all four days. Plenty of Cosplay and sites included.

Enjoy the photo album, and like the Drinking and Nerding Facebook page while you are there.
